IP1 Virtual Reality at Škoda Auto

Abstract

The application of virtual reality in the automobile industry has already been a fact for a long time. It helps accelerate the development of new models and the preparation of the prototype production. You will just learn from this lecture, how is this technology used at company Škoda Auto. And not only this will be shown. The hardware and software equipment will be brought out, you will see samples of VR presentations. Together with positive features, some problems of faster virtual method development will be mentioned from user's point of view.

IP2 VR on Mobile Devices & Augmented Reality

Abstract

Presentation on the emerging area of Virtal Reality and interactive 3D use on mobile devices and how augmented reality will play a major role here. Starting with current state of the art in mobile VR presentations the talk will include a look at major application areas, technology and future outlook in the next 1-5 years.

Speaker's Biography

Mats Johansson is a Virtual Reality pioneer with more than 15 years of experience in the 3D interactive simulation market from the sales, marketing and design perspectives. Early in his career he was responsible for structural simulation for multi-billion dollar offshore oil and gas production units in the North Sea. After that experience, Johansson transferred to Volvo Cars as a consultant and quickly was promoted to Project Manager, where he participated in the development of new vehicle models.

In 1995, Johansson leveraged his U.S. market experience to build the Michigan-based subsidiary consulting company, Prosolvia, Inc., from the ground up. In less than three years he grew the company to 35 employees. In the late 1990s, he also developed strategic partnerships with EDS and five renowned North American universities and colleges in the area of Virtual Reality.

A specialist in the Immersive Display Technology, Johansson holds a Masters of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration degree in International Business from Chalmers University.



IP3 Real-time Global Illumination for Next Generation Games

Abstract

Global illumination is an important part of an attractive computer graphics. Unfortunately computing GI was not feasible in realtime, disqualifying it from the most common rendering scenarios. Current state of the art realtime renderers (CryEngine2, UnrealEngine3, etc.) use very crude approximations for dynamic lights, since no better approach existed. In Lightsprint we selected subset of physically correct global illumination, with balanced calculation cost and importance for human perception, and developed new generation of realtime renderer, with global illumination in dynamic scenes. Our approach avoids high frequency noise and other clearly visible artifacts. Result is available for visualization and game developers in Lightsprint SDK. The talk will explain architecture and novel components of our renderer and demonstrate it in real-time.

Speaker's Biography

Štěpán Hrbek is CTO of Lightsprint. After receiving Masters degree in computer science from Charles University, Prague in 2001, he worked in games industry, developing next generation renderers. When commodity computers become fast enough for realtime global illumination, he founded Lightsprint. His research interests include realtime rendering, global illumination, ray-scene intersections.
