VPHOP: Osteoporotic Virtual Physiological Human, FP7, ICT-223865

The aim of VPHOP is to develop a multiscale modelling technology based on conventional diagnostic imaging methods that makes it possible, in a clinical setting, to predict for each patient the strength of his/her bones, how this strength is likely to change over time, and the probability that the he/she will overload his/her bones during daily life. With these three predictions, the evaluation of the absolute risk of bone fracture will be much more accurate than any prediction based on external and indirect determinants, as is current clinical practice. These predictions will be used to:

  • Improve the diagnostic accuracy of the current clinical standards;
  • Provide the basis for an evidence-based prognosis with respect to the natural evolution of the disease, to pharmacological treatments, and/or to preventive interventional treatments aimed to selectively strengthen particularly weak regions of the skeleton.

Patients at high risk of fracture, and for which the pharmacological treatment appears insufficient, the VPHOP system will also assist the interventional radiologist in planning the augmentation procedure.

The various modelling technologies developed during the project will be validated not only in vitro, on animal models, or against retrospective clinical outcomes, but will also be assessed in term of clinical impact and safety on small cohorts of patients enrolled at four different clinical institutions, providing the factual basis for effective clinical and industrial exploitation.

Vital Mind, FP7, ICT-215387

Elderly people are concerned about maintaining their mental vitality. However, many among the elderly are computer illiterate, and cannot benefit from the growing number of computer programs designed to preserve cognitive ability. Instead, they resort to television viewing. Today, they represent the largest proportion of the television viewing public. This remains true even though it is has been established that television viewing has adverse cognitive effects on the elderly. This project intends to use a combination of cognitive psychology, the television medium and advanced interactive Information Computer Technology (ICT) to enable the elderly to actively participate in mind fitness exercises while they are sitting in front of their TV set. The Vital Mind Consortium has the expertise to transform passive television viewing into dynamic activities of mental preservation and intellectual enhancement. Such cerebral stimulation in a mentally rich environment is crucial for healthy aging. Because cognitive decline in aging people affects functional outcomes such as frequent lapses of memory (forgetting of where things are placed, forgetting the first names of people, etc…), unsafe driving behaviour, as well as a diminution in autonomy and quality of life , the proposed project will assist in prolonging older adults’ personal autonomy and consequently promote their active participation in Society. Such a tool would easily be integrated in the homes of handicapped individuals to speed the rehabilitation process. It would alleviate common prevailing age-related impairments such as deficits in executive functioning, memory and speed of processing.

Enhanced Learning Unlimited (ELU), FP6, IST-4-027866

The ELU project intends to develop and validate the use of Interactive Digital TV (iDTV) system for t-learning as one of the key application areas for the societal and economical development of the enlarged Europe. The iDTV has a potential to become an important tool of edutainment (i.e. integration of education into the entertainment environment of television), because of the familiarity of TV, its easy utilization using the remote control and especially because of the power of upcoming interactive technologies. To be able to reuse this potential, it is necessary to develop new formats, applications and methodologies for delivery of educational content to target users.

The project researches, develops and implements pedagogical scenarios for the use of iDTV at home, universities and schools. Further the project includes major efforts to enhance Media Home Platform (MHP) with new functionalities required for implementing appealing t-learning systems for the general audience. In particular, it will implement specific modules for advanced HCI, personalization, delivery subsystem (i.e. ancillary user devices), and game templates. In order to verify its technology, the ELU project will develop the required tools to simulate iDTV for areas in which real deployment is not feasible at this stage.

Tiger

Tiger (Toolkit for Interactive Graphics rendERing) is a Java library to ease development of multi-pass rendering effects in OpenGL. The library is accessing OpenGL API through JOGL. The source code and compiled library is available for download.

Projects with industry

Design of Smart TV user interface

Within this research project the team designed user interface concept for Smart TV and developed prototype of the user interface. The work was done in cooperation with company Alnair a.s. within a framework of a research project funded by ministry of industry in Czech Republic. The user interface concept (adopted and implemented by Alnair a.s.) is now part of the user interface of O2 TV in Czech republic.

Design of Windows Phone user interface of iDoklad

Within this project I have designed user interface and visual style (color palette, backgrounds, icons) of iDoklad application for Windows Phone. The application allows to browse, edit and create invoices on the go. The work was done for Cígler software via Interaction4you company. The application (implemented by Cígler software) is available in the Windows Phone app store.
