Simulation of lunar eclipses
The goal of this work is to create realistic picture of the Moon during a lunar eclipse. The method described here calculates both direct and indirect illumination resulting from the refraction in the Earth's atmosphere. Other simulated physical processes are the scattering of light in the air and the absorption by stratospheric aerosols. Direct and indirect light will be simulated by ray tracing and photon mapping respectively. We will use tone mapping for rendering an image with high dynamic range. Moon's surface will be simulated by mipmaps constructed from satellite images. The resulting image is then compared with digital photograph of lunar eclipse.
