In
the XVII century pirate attacks sponsored by the European Kingdoms tried to
destabilize the Spanish Crown. The attacks lasted for over 160 years and this
situation forced Campeche's inhabitants to build forts, bastions and walls around
the city to defend themselves. Thereof, Campeche has very important historical
constructions of magnificent beauty.
